Retinal Detachment

Retinal Detachment is a disorder of the eye which involves the separation of the retina from the underlying layers. This results in flashes of light in the visual field, blurred vision, and seeing an increased number of floaters. The condition gradually progresses and becomes more serious, which makes it important to consult a doctor immediately and seek treatment. This disorder is easily treatable by cryopexy, laser photocoagulation, or surgery at Skipper Eye-Q.

Frequently
Asked Questions

  • ABOUT RETINA

How can one prevent retinal detachment?

Retinal detachment occurs mainly due to aging, inherent weaknesses in the retina, or directly because of eye injury. Systematic conditions like diabetes and hypertension could also be the reason.

There is no definite way to prevent all cases of retinal detachment. However, one can reduce the risk of retinal detachment by protecting the eyes from any injury and taking care of our systemic health.

Protecting your eyes with goggles or shields during bike riding, sports, and other activities is a good strategy to avoid retinal issues.

For people suffering from systemic diseases like diabetes, undergoing regular comprehensive eye check-ups every year is a good step for prevention.

Retinal detachment is a medical emergency, and it can cause permanent blindness, so if you are experiencing any symptoms suggestive of retinal detachment, please visit your ophthalmologist at the earliest before any permanent damage to the eyes or loss of vision can occur.

How do retinal detachment flashes feel?

Retinal detachment flashes are also known as “Photopsia”. A person with retinal detachment notices different shapes in front of them. These flashes could be:

  • The appearance of shooting stars or similar streaks of light, even with closed eyes.
  • Sparking in the field of vision
  • Shimmering lights
  • The perception of lightening in absence of any light

What do Floaters feel like?

Retinal detachment can also be preceded by shower of floaters. A person with retinal detachment notices different shapes in front of them. These floaters can be seen as:

  • Black spots
  • Foggy clouds
  • Spider-like structures
  • Thread-like structure
  • Amoebas
  • Blurred patches in peripheral vision
  • Curtain-like shadows
  • Squiggly lines

What are the symptoms of a detached retina?

  • Feeling of some sort of obstruction in front of the eye
  • Photopsia (Flashes) and fluctuating vision
  • Total painless darkness in the eye
  • Shadows in front of the eyes
  • Debris in the eyes
  • Curtain-like structures in the field of vision

How long after occurrence can retinal detachment cause blindness?

The retina is a neural tissue and cannot regenerate. The back portion of the retina loses its blood supply after getting detached and starts dying immediately, so it is a medical emergency for the eye. The earlier retinal detachment is treated, the higher the chances of preventing blindness.

How can retinal detachment be cured naturally?

There is no way retinal tear or retinal detachment can heal naturally. Left untreated, it keeps dying and ultimately leads to irreversible vision loss.

What happens during retinal detachment surgery?

Patients who suffer from retinal detachment require surgery as soon as possible post the diagnosis.
The surgery performed is known as Retinal Reattachment Surgery. In the surgical procedure, the retina is fixed back either externally by a procedure called buckling, or by removing the internal gel and fixing it from the inside using a procedure called vitrectomy. Such eyes often need a gas or silicon oil bubble to support the retina that is secured by laser or cryo-treatment. Already present fluid under the retina gets slowly absorbed up, and the retina gets attached to the wall of the eye. For some days, the patient must maintain particular positions of the head as prescribed by the surgeon to keep the gas or silicon oil bubble in a proper position.

Can an optometrist diagnose retinal detachment?

No, an optometrist is not qualified to diagnose retinal detachment. However, an optometrist may observe certain clinical signs of detachment and refer you to an ophthalmologist for diagnosis.

Does retinal detachment occur in both eyes?

Yes, it can affect both eyes in up to 10% of patients. It could be because of long-term eye conditions like myopia or because of systemic diseases like diabetes that affect both eyes.

Who is at risk of retinal detachment?

Anyone who has:

  • Long term eye diseases
  • Injury or Trauma to eyes
  • Ageing
  • Myopia

Are eye flashes serious?

Yes, eye flashes are serious. They can signal retinal tearing or the start of retinal detachment.

How is retinal tear different from retinal detachment?

Retinal tear is a stage seen before retinal detachment. Retinal tear without retinal detachment can easily be treated with retinal lasers, and thus a surgery can be avoided if the tear is detected before it progresses to detachment.

Do genetics play role in retinal detachment?

There are various types of retinal detachment. One of the types, known as rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, is associated with inherited traits. So, retinal detachments can run in families because some types do have genetic components.

What causes retinal detachment after cataract surgery?

As the vitreous fluid present in the central part of the eye becomes increasingly watery from gel-like liquids, and with ageing, the central vitreous gel starts melting and it can collapse suddenly, leading to a condition called posterior vitreous detachment, that in turn leads to retinal tear and retinal detachment. Cataract Surgery can accelerate this natural age-related process.

How long does it take for the detached retina to heal? Does it heal by itself?

Retinal detachment is a medical emergency. If it is not healed on time, it will lead to permanent loss of vision or blindness. Most retinal detachment cases need urgent surgery and will take approximately 1-6 weeks to completely reattach the detached retina. Visual recovery takes a longer time of up to 6 months. Rare forms of retina detachments like exudative ones that develop due to leaking of fluid can disappear spontaneously, but they also need urgent check-ups and advice from retinal surgeons.
